I would have put it in manual and forced a downshift, and yes it needs 4:10's and a 10 speed.
Then again, 4:10's may have left it screaming at 5500 rpm on that climb depending upon the gear spread and whether it could pull the next one. I totally agree that 10 gears would be great, so much so that 4:10 wouldn't even be needed any more.
