To put things in perspective - the might Dodge Ram Cummins 6BT debuted in 1989 with a whopping 160 hp, and ground-breaking 400 lb-ft. It also had a class leading 16,000 lbs GCWR.
Now we have 100 more hp, and 80 lb-ft more torque, in a 1/2 ton diesel, coupled with a MUCH better transmission.
The nice thing about the old ones though is you can turn them up quite significantly and even more so with a pump swap. Also the cooling systems were designed to run at full load. Factory transmissions did leave something to be desired though and were the weak link in stock form.
Oh for sure, didn't mean to imply the 3.0 ED can match an ISB's tuning potential.
What I meant is laws of physics don't change, so if 160 hp was sufficient for 16k GCW back then, 260 hp is more than plenty today. We feel it's not enough because we think it takes 445 hp to tow 23,000 lbs, when there're Super-Bs grossing 130,000 lbs with only 415 hp.
