To put things in perspective - the might Dodge Ram Cummins 6BT debuted in 1989 with a whopping 160 hp, and ground-breaking 400 lb-ft. It also had a class leading 16,000 lbs GCWR.

Now we have 100 more hp, and 80 lb-ft more torque, in a 1/2 ton diesel, coupled with a MUCH better transmission.

My 2002 Cummins had 235hp and 460tq. It was an awesome puller. The 3.0L ED will be awesome for pulling an RV.

I had a 99 with 235 hp/460 lb-ft. It wasn't that awesome to me until I added another 150+ hp. In stock form it would loose speed going up hills towing just a 10k cattle trailer. Low speed pulling it was great, but it would have trouble holding 65 mph on hill steeper than 3%. Modified, it had no issues pulling 10k at 65 or even 70 mph up any hill.

If you’re towing 10,000 pounds on a regular basis you should have a
    2500-3500.

To me 7000 - 8000 pounds on a regular basis would be my limit.

I’ve towed 7000 pounds with my Jeep and it held speed and was very acceptable. And it gets 15 + MPG towing that at 65 MPH. You won’t get that in a bigger truck or a gasser.

And, for the record, your 99 probably had half the gears that these 3.0s come with. Big change in capability with that alone.

  • Interesting..... I still wouldn't purchase a diesel in a half ton truck
  • I’m happy with the EcoDiesel in my Grand Cherokee. If I were buying a 1500, that is the engine I would want.

    More info
  • I'm way to old to sacrifice my first born, but.... :)

Allpar says the compression ratio INCREASED from 16 to 16.5/1.
  • Wow, 480 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm. That is good. The 260 hp is not bad for towing a 7k trailer, but I would want at least 350 hp if I were pulling the rated 12k.
