24-28' Bunkhouse... Any love/hate opinions??

If you downsize, be sure to go with a slide model. We did 7 seasons with the Jayco 27bh (now 26bh) and it was great. But, as the kids got older and we added a dog, there really wasn't enough room to comfortably hang out when needed. The good news is there are a million floor plans to choose from. If it were me, I would probably keep the rv and go with more tow vehicle. 8k should be easy to get something newer and more efficient.
