I wouldn't say that a BMS is essential. A BMS is a fancy name for an on/off switch that monitors cells voltages and temperature. As long as you don't exceed correct voltage ranges or store them where it freezes a standard non balancing BMS doesn't add anything to the pack. Using a quality charging source(s) and using a LVDC you can safely run LiFePO4 cells without one.

HERERecently I have relocated this bank into a 5th wheel and changed the cell configuration from (2) 12v 300 Ah batteries into a single 24v@ 300 Ah battery and went with a 24v magnum 4000 watt inverter. I did add a cheap 200Ah@24v Daly BMS this time as a safety net since they are readily available now and not expensive in lieu of the low voltage disconnect I was using before.
