Does it not bother anyone on this forum that any neophyte can buy a truck rated for towing over 30K, hitch up and go merrily down the road without any CDL, training, experience, etc?
I gotta believe that the manufacturers product liability lawyers are having heartburn over this.
And I think it is a VERY good reason not to jump right into this market. Let the others go first. Let them jump off the cliff, so to speak, and see how it works out for them.
The RV market for such weight is tiny to non existent.
Throwing together some parts to get the rating higher is easy. Defending doing so, maybe not so much.
The world is full of choices that people and companies are free to make. But just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should.
I remember back in 2001-2002 when I had my first Duramax, and the EDGE tuners came out. I bought one. But it was a known fact that using the highest setting would mean a short life for the Allison. The aftermarket went after the problem and came up with fixes. That is when the Allison naysayers first started mouthing off. Well GM has upped the power several times since then, making upgrades to the Allison to handle the increases. The same thing is still happening today.
If GM really wanted in this market that doesn't really exist... It is not hard to do.
Remember, they have been burned by lawsuits in the past.
I think that is why they adopting a wait and see approach. Once the others have tested the waters, they will either plunge in, or not... Depending on how that works out for them.
And yes, I think this is a GOOD reason.
It is also much more likely than saying that GM can't do it.. That is a joke. GM is certainly capable of doing it, if they want to.
