If the piece you have won't cover the whole area, bias it to the passenger side. As you likely know, when towing, the hot exhaust heats up the passenger footwell more than the engine heats the drivers.
That is exactly what I did. I rode in the passengers seat when the tranny guy was test driving it and realized it was noisier over there. So I started as far as I could up the firewall and back to the storage hump. Then up and over the tranny hump and across the storage area. Then back up the drivers side.
