Yes but your cousin was using an oil that wasn't specified and some exotic 5W30 Euro oil is was ram specified until now.
Having said that running 15W40 probably isn't hurting a thing, but if it was me I would try a 5W40 just to see if it would improve the mpg.
With the new API CK oil coming out at the end of the year there will be lower viscosity oils coming to market just like the gas engines are now running lower viscosity oils.
