You are saying the overdrive clutches have grenaded and I presume you are claiming the clutches can’t handle high torque. People with new F450s are claiming they can tow their 22000 lb 5ver from here to Kingdom Come and they might drop to 9 th gear on the odd hill. Oh boy ..... those poor overdrive clutches are taking everything that Powerstroke can throw at them.
When I’m towing heavy with 3.31 gears I lock out 9 and 10 and when I hit the hills I’m in 7th.... 1:1 ratio..... perfect.
Go back and re-read what I wrote. I said "
Just about every 6R140 through our nine Ford dealerships with burnt or grenaded overdrive clutches was with a taller gear ratio and/or heavy oversized tires. "
How do you get an F450 with a short 4.30 gear ratio in my comment about taller 3.55 and below gears? Fact is, a 4.30 puts less stress on the trans than a 3.31 axle and therefore handles more without dramatically increasing the chance of overdrive clutch failure regardless of make.
