3.31 gears at 40,000 lbs gross.

Just to give a bit of a feel for how different gear ratios would behave while towing I locked out 10 then 10th and 9th then added them back again while travelling on a straight stretch of road with 32000 lbs in tow. My truck has 3.31 gears with 34 inch tires. 3.55 gears would look like 10th locked out 4.30 would be like locking out 9nth and 10th. I like having 3.31s and locking out the upper gears when I don’t want them and having them available for when I do.

If it worked the way you said then the manuf would recommend that to tow a certain amount of weight you would lock out Ome of the top gears for that particular weight rating!

Effectively, that's what they are doing. They just do it automatically. If the truck can only hold 8th gear, it won't use 9 and 10.

You are seeing fewer rear end ratios available and they tend to be lower (numerically).

The main reason to consider a higher (numerically) ratio is if the lower ratio doesn't have a tow rating sufficient for your trailer. If it's within the tow rating, the transmission will effectively lock out a gear or two so the overall gear ratio keeps the engine happy.

Yes but the engine and trans are working harder in each of the gears with wrong gearing!

  • So was that other pic of the bumpee stops on your 2021 truck?
    6500km and it’s rusting away....

You’re right, when I lock out 9 and 10 I basically have an 8 speed. But even with 3.31 gears my low gear is similar to 1st gear with a 4.30 final in a 2019 with the 6r140. Probably my most used gears in my truck are 9 and 10 so, if I had purchased a F450 I would be missing out on the ratios I use the most.
  • You do know that the final drive ratio effectively changes each of the gears in the transmission, lower gears will make each gear more efficient. And then you could use the gears that you made unusable with the higher gearing!

It's legal in Canada, it's legal down here, as long as axle weights are with in legal limits in US, perfederak bridge law's.

This also she's the gear it fast run it slow in direct, vs gear it slow, run it fast setups using OD, DOF or direct as your high gear going down the road.

I would prefer to have lower gears in pumpkins, lick out 1st and 2nd unless on some of our local 20-30+% local city county grades. That's me vs 4x. If I lived where he did, I might agree more so with him.
