IMHO the 3.42 rear end ratio is not going to produce sufficient fuel economy increases to offset the future issues running as such low RPM for prolonged time can cause. All diesel motors have a "sweet spot". A RPM range where they produce maximum power/economy and longevity. The I6 Cummins seems to like about 1700RPM best. A 3.42 rear end is going to be way below that number, closer to idle. So when power is called for it will be an up hill battle to get into the power band. 3.73 should be the minimum gear ratio people should consider for a vehicle that is expected to tow a significant load for at least part of it's life.
