The reason 2 of the 3 truck mtgs offer higher than 3.73 ratios now (lower numerically) is because they ALL have vastly more power stock than even a few years ago and all have double OD auto transmissions.
800+ ft lbs and a smart trans can do about anything with higher diff ratios.
In short a 3.42 geared new Cummins HO will pull what you're asking it to do with ease. Unless you were towing heavy the majority of the time or towing really heavy like 20k lb trailers the higher gears will be fine...... Unless you plan on adding big tires. Couple sizes up, no problem. If you are doing 35 or 37s then get 3.73s min.
All that said, considering you have 2 OD gears, 3.73 or even 4.10 will still pull acceptable rpms at hiway speed and not affect mileage much.
