There is a reason for the 3 different ratios, and 3 different tow ratings.
A friend of mine bought a used dodge/cummins with 4.10s. I actually borrowed it once to tow my TT...I wasn't impressed as it was a dog.
His tranny went out and he spent about 4K on that. About a year later his pinion seal was leaking. When the shop opened it up, they found that the previous owner had swapped in 3.42 gears!! His truck with those gears was rated for less than 10K towing. His horse trailer w LQ weighed about 14K. That was why his tranny failed.
The new trucks are beefier and more powerful, but Dodge still has different ratings for each gear ratio..
And I will point out that with 3.73s, the Dodge is very comparable to the others tow ratings when equipped the same. The 4.10s/30K are just for bragging rights, as the 3.73s are capable of most any RV available.
