IMO, those are smoke and mirrors numbers....the only real way the different rear end ratios affect towing weights is the ability to start from a dead stop and put less stress on the drive train as you get a greater weight moving.
My 3:73 6 speed pulled 19K just fine, it just didn't stop worth a damn.
