Because of quite expensive repairs on my diesel (see signature) it has got me thinking. I am half way contemplating trading for a 3/4 ton gasser. My diesel tows very well, so I am wondering: would a 3/4 gasser’s towing performance be comparable to my Duramax, or would it be more like a “beefed up” version of the 1/2 ton gasser I used to tow with years ago? On trips I am towing 8500-9000 lbs.
I live in Bremerton, I tow all over the PACNORWEST with a gasser 1 ton. I have had a gasser 3/4 ton or better for the last 15 years. An 02 2500HD and my current 3500HD. I towed 45,000 miles with the 02. I had to do a water pump and intake gasket in that time. The intake takes about an hour and half and 75 dollars. It is dry, no oil or coolant touches it. The water pump maybe an hour and a half 150 dollars, plugs and wires 1 hour and 84 dollars. I took that thing to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Idaho, Montana. Never missed a beat. Kept up with traffic and averaged 7 to 8mpg. You just have to be aware it isn't a diesel. The 2017 tows circles around my 02 and very rarely sees over 3500 RPM towing anywhere around here. Like say over I-90 to Lake Easton, or going up Vantage either side.
If you want to keep or get a diesel. Go ahead. People like different things.
I don't daily drive my trucks so it sits unless I am towing. For what you are towing you don't need the diesel, but I am sure it is nice to have. How often are you camping? I typically camp anywhere from 50 to 70 nights a year.
