3:73 to 4:30 on Excursion V-10

I know there are some guys running excursion v10s on here with 4:30 gears was wondering if anyone started with 3:73s? Got a quote from a local shop for 1500 installed with factory gears in the rear and an aluminum cover for the rear. I thought it would be more so I think I am going to have him do it in November once the season is over I was looking for opinions. I am towing a Summerland 2670 around 7300 loaded and it tows ok but it's really hilly in NE Pa and I think 4:30 would help a lot plus I may go a little bigger in the future :) . Your opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Paul
  • I went from 3.73's to 4.30's, but I'm towing 9,000 pounds. Have you tried towing with OD locked out? This may get you the responsiveness you seek at no cost. My load is so heavy I tow with OD locked out with 4.30's. I lock in the cruise at 58 mph for a stress free tow. I couldn't do that with the 3.73's because the RPM's were too low to pull the load. You are towing less weight. You may be able to increase your speed slightly (62) to keep it in the power band and avoid the downshifts I hated. I also have a 5 star tuner.

This is the KEY to what experienced people who tow have been preaching about with respect to tires sizes, differential gears, and transmissions.

I lock in the cruise at 55 mph, with 4.88 gears (stock) and the stock tire size, so that I can utilize all four gears of the transmission under load. And, the speed limit while towing is 55 anyway.

(I'll never understand why some people tow trailers at 75 mph).
  • 55 and 58 mph is too slow for me. my X performs best when it is at 65-67mph. with the 3.73`s it was just a few hundred rpm low before the sweet spot in the rpm range. the 4.30`s brought everything in where it feels best for me.
