Just imagine your truck is yelling "Powaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" If it makes you more comfortable, start yelling it out loud with the engine lol. As others have said, it's healthy for the engine to work in that range since it's the best range for power generation for a gas engine. Lower rpms will only help to add load to the engine. I wouldn't worry too much about wear and tear. You're only talking about fairly short jaunts while pulling up grades. I wouldn't mind listening to the engine sing all day in that range. As long as your temps are in check and you keep up with your maintenance, then everything should be fine. These engines are built to really work in this range. Now if you want to talk about scary then look at modern sportbikes. On my bike the fun just starts to kick in at 4500. 10,000 will put the fear of God in just about anyone. 14,000 feels and sounds like you're heading into another universe lol.
