Like many others have said, I will not own a truck without 4WD, however I live in MN where I need it frequently in the winter and I do get off the pavement once in a while.
That said, that OP has a legitmate point, 4WD isn't needed by everyone. If payload in the concern, I think that concern is overstated as the added weight is on the front axle. If cost is a concern, then if you don't live in a snowing/icy climate and you won't be going off of maintained roads, then it probably isn't needed. Perhaps keep a tow strap onboard if you decide to go with 2WD.
