5th Wheel-Pull behind?

10 years ago went from a 17 ft. hybrid trailer to a 25 ft. 5th wheel. One thing I really like about the 5er is the lack of all that hitch equalizer chains, bars and stuff and the ability to see the hitch when hooking up. Going back to a pull-behind would solve some of our problems about choice and finding a small unit. Just wondering, have there been any improvements easing the difficulty of hooking and un hooking a trailer and all that hitch stuff?

    :E:E WOW :h

Even with a "lite weight" 5th you must have been pushing your payload limits considering a 5th will have at least 20% pin weight!

In your case 22-25ft range will require WD even with the "lite" versions.

As far as ease of connecting, that hasn't "improved" any but electric tongue jacks will make it a bit less of a workout.

Or you can do what I do, buy a bigger truck that is able to handle the trailer of your size requirements without WD. Saves me hassle, 150 lbs of extra dead weigh in iron and $$$ (WD doesn't come cheap and the extra cost of moving up to a bigger truck is often not much more than what WD costs). My 3/4 ton pulls my 26ft TT without the "need" for WD although it is one the bubble so to speak.

  • third in for a BU camera and electric Jack. ALso have a camera on the back of the trailer so I can see whats behind me when traveling and helps in backing up.
  • What is your TV? Maybe yyou do not need WD and sway control. That makes some hookup easier.

Backup camera and electric tongue jack help make hitching/unhitching easier. Even with a pickup, I wouldn't trade a TT for a 5er for use of truck bed.

How small of an RV do you want? Scamp has a 19' one.
  • I use a backup camera to hitch up to an Andersen WD / sway control hitch. The monitor clips on my rear view mirror, and, I just set the camera on my bumper. I also have a camera mounted on rear of the trailer. After hitching up, I plug in that camera for continuous rear view.

Folks using the andersen hitch (no bars, no noise, no grease) on smaller trailers, seem to be pretty pleased with its performance. There have been a few with larger trailers, who were not so pleased. So far, mine seems to work fine.
