5th wheel to TT ?

I've had 5th wheels for 15 years, and want to go smaller, and lighter. My question is if I stay under 30' will I notice much difference in towing. I know a 5er tows great, but I don't have any experience with a WD hitch.
I'm looking at a GD Imagine 2800BH TT that weighs 6k, and tow with a 03 Ram 2500 CC. Thanks for any advice.

  • Travel trailer vs 5th wheel is really just a Ford/Chevy issue, ie: personal preference. I've had both and there are pros and cons to each of them. I currently have a 35ft travel trailer and we love it. I think hitch-up is a little easier with the 5er, but I personally like having the extra bed space for firewood, coolers, etc. Since the pivot points are in different locations, there is some difference in the way they track behind the TV around corners, and the TT will be a little quicker to respond to turning while backing up. Plus no worries about remembering to put the tailgate down prior to unhitching. Just be careful that you don't replace the head scars with shin scars from the hitch! But I agree with the previous poster, with that trailer, your truck, and the proper hitch set-up, you'll never know it's back there.
  • A smaller travel trailer with your truck would tow really well, especially if you use one of those expensive hitches that a lot of the people on here seem to like. IMO it won't ever be quite as good of a towing experience as a fifth wheel just by the nature of the setup, though.
  • Thanks for the quick replies, I have looked at shorter 5th wheels, but there are some great TT's out there. I like the idea of getting my truck bed back, and no more scars on my head from the pin box.
  • In my experience, the critical piece in towing a TT is the hitch system. I used a Reese Dual Cam hitch system to keep the trailer towing properly, especially in winds and passing or being passed by 18 wheel big trucks.
  • As the others say, "Try it, you'll like it". Towing a travel trailer with a capable tow vehicle is a piece of cake.
  • I went from a 40 ft 5thw to a 26 ft TT and enjoy towing the TT over the 5th w
I will not be going back to a 5 th w
  • Piece of cake with your truck. I towed my daughter's 32ft 7000lb TT recently with just a single friction bar, no issues, towed great.
  • Towing a 6000 pound TT with your truck??? .... you'll never know there's a trailer back there after all those years with a 5er. About any kind of WD hitch system will work for you considering the weight of the trailer.
