I guess it is all about defining requirements. Some people may not need the power of the diesel...nor wanting to worry about some of the worries that come with a modern Diesel engine.
Not everyone needs or wants a diesel. Many individuals are satisfied with the lower upfront cost and getting the job done with a capable TV that has just enough power for towing - especially when they tow 2-3K/year.
The great thing about the Big 3 is they all provide options for the consumers....in gas or diesel TVs.
I think the reason why most compare the two is a lot of people like myself are on that cuspt of 1500 vs 2500 truck mainly due to payload. We want to stretch our dollar the best we can. And we probably only tow 1500-2500 miles a year. Take my existing TT now behind any 1500/150 trunk all day long every day. Add a 4 wheeler to the bed of the truck and wham over payload. I use my truck as my DD. I would love a 3500 Cummins but just do not need that kind of power. And there is that time when I am up on the elk hunt in a bunch of snow and mud and need to be very gentle on the throttle and having 850 lbs. of torque is bad as it spins the wheels a little too quickly. The 6.4 becomes a good compromise between the 1500/150 world and the big diesel world.
