While not towing, the tranny on my 6.4 hemi 3.73 gears generally does okay. It still has some annoying behavior and shifting but I can live with it by just manually changing gears. Towing is a whole other story. With my 11K 5th wheel the shifting sucks. Mile gap between 1-2 and the just ridiculous programming around 2-3-4. When rolling along in 4 and hitting an incline it holds 4 for waaaaaay too long, then skips right past 3 and SLAMS into 2. This pattern is a common complaint with this truck and no update or "flashing" is going to help (at least nothing Ram has cared to come up with yet, anyway).
The 2-3-4 thing can be fixed by shifting manually so that's fine. The 1-2 gap is just a physical limitation and poor design. I tow less than 5% of my miles so I just deal with it. If I was out with my trailer more and working less (dare I dream), I'd off load this truck instantly.
Now, the million dollar question is how much of a beast is the Hemi going to be with the new 8spd tranny? I have to think that is going to be an amazing combination. Of course, that HO Cummins with 1000 lb/ft of torque looks pretty nice as well!
