I used to think the same, but then, if you think about it, the computer probably knows EXACTLY how much gas you used, and how far you traveled. When you fill up, you may or may not top off (or the pump may or may not shut off) at the same spot.
Now, if the manufacturers "tweak" the math algorithm to show better, I guess that's a whole different thing.
On my Sierra 1500, I always checked both, but I found the computer was pretty dang close to my hand calculations. Haven't done both on my Ram yet.
When I drove my 2014 2500 Cummins home from the dealer, EVIC cleared and showed 20+MPG. Around town, Im hitting about 15. Now, in the short haul with my trailer back to the trailer dealer, I showed 10MPG.
