6.7 Cummins: 20+ MPG?!

The fuelly.com average MPG for 2011-2016 6.7 Cummins seems to hover right around 16 MPG.

Today the wife and I spent most of the day running some errands with our new 2016 6.7 3500 SRW. Put about 125 miles on the truck (odo says 660 total miles). About 50 percent was interstate at 65 MPH, the remaining miles were driven at 40-45 MPH on secondary roads with stop signs and lights about every mile or two. Filled up the truck just before we started and reset the EVIC. Filled it up at the same pump when we finished.

EVIC showed 21.9 MPG. Hand calculated at 20.5 MPG. Average speed was approx. 38 MPH.

After the first 30 or 40 miles today, I couldn't help but notice the EVIC hovering around 21 MPG. Just for the heck of it I kept driving conservative just to see what was possible.

This is a very pleasant surprise. I honestly expected to get around 13-15 MPG until this thing got broken-in.
  • 2015 3500 DRW, stuff in the back ~200 lbs, 68-69 mph on the interstate at least 18.6 depending on the hills.
  • I wouldn't trust EVIC mileage or any other manufacturers computer mileage numbers. The are notorious for being optimistic especially Ram's. My EVIC always shows 2-3 MPG greater than hand calculated numbers.
  • We got 18+ coming home for the dealer in Colorado at 80 MPH, in Western Wyoming. Chris
  • Speed, acceleration, and grades are fuel economy killers. Larger and more aggressive tires do their share, also. I have done 30+ with both the EcoD and the Jeep by using cruise control at 60MPH on a clear hiway. The EcoD is going to lose a few MPG soon when I put on LT tires with a little more aggressive tread.
  • Good mileage.......but not real surprised given the lower speeds.

My old 2007 5.9L 7900# gets 17 mpg (hand cal) when I keep it under 65.
Step it up to 70 and it drops to 14 mpg

Course hook it up to the 5vr and it's 10 mpg 22,000# combo

Check it again same type of speeds at 30,000 miles......should go up.
    Enjoy that truck, good choice!
  • A couple of times I reset the MPG average on my Cummins while driving at approx. 60 MPH (cruise control on) for a few miles. Got very similar results as you did, approx. 25 MPG (based on an overly optimistic 27 MPG on the EVIC). Simply amazing these heavy trucks (from the Big 3) can get this kind of mileage. From all indications I'm getting 15 percent better mileage than I did with my Tundra 5.7 V8, at least when empty. I've yet to tow anything.
  • our 04.5 duramax at best did 17 maybe 18 on the highway. Or 2015 denali, 600lbs heavier, does 18-19 consistently, best was 24.5 running about 62 empty when DW was driving the denali and I was driving a uhaul. we won't talk about what the uhaul truck got.!!

drive conservatively on the highway and I think you'll end up over 20.

In town and towing, didn't see much difference compared to the 04.

twice going from portland to san diego on I-5 we managed over 20 hand calculated. newer trucks, considering the huge frontal area, high Cd, and heavy weight do darn good IMHO. In terms of "ton miles/gallon" they are better than most econoboxes.
