Had the "thumb shifter" on two Chevy D/A dually's and on all of three of my Rams...never had to downshift manually, nor did the engine scream to go to another gear, the computer changes the gears and does a better job than I would....Drops down when it needs to..Never lugged the engine....guess it depends on where you tow and what gearing you have.
