6.7 Powerstroke Oil recommendations

Just an FYI to newer owners of 6.7 Powerstroke. Not sure if anyone saw/heard this at all, but last month Ford came out and said not to use some brands of CK oils as it wasn't "meeting" certain Ford tests (namely wear if not mistaken). Upon reading this, I said to myself "WTheck?" Called to a maker of oil I use and have been using and it seems that the 1 type I want to use is 1 that "doesn't" meet Ford's criteria for now anyways. He suggested using a different type (blend VS full synthetic) as long as it's in warranty. The blend oil is CJ oil and full synth is CK. However, spoke to Ford dealer and he said it's just a bulletin and Ford cannot change the warranty in mid stream if your engine calls for CJ oil and all you can get is CK. Course he is saying Ford is recommending to use their oil., read $$$$$$$$$$

If others could chime in with opinions/ facts or other would be great.

  • Costco had an instant rebate of $10 on a 3 gallon case of Delo 400LE 10/40 oil. Apparently they were burning out their CJ inventory and were replacing it with CK inventory. I asked my neighbor who is in the know and he said the CK oil has less phosphorous for emissions purposes and therefore less lubricity properties. He felt the discontinued oil was a better product so I purchased 4 more cases. I know it isn't for a Ford but thought I would interject.
  • Hello,

You can use any CJ-4 diesel oil in your 6.7. I would recommend the 5-40 syn as it is the rated oil for towing.

I use the Valvoline 5-40 Extreme Blue, ( Yes I know its a Cummins oil but its rated for constant use and idle) Less regens with it and is actually cheaper than Ford or Shell. Also there are claims out there it reduces the typewriter noise after an oil change.

Ford is not blaming oil for any mech problems. They say under testing with CK-4 which contains less Zinc additive it increases wear on the valve train.

Us muscle car guys know all about the effects lack of Zinc has on a camshaft

What part of testing oil do you not understand?

That's what I used, it is not approved since the CK specification and the reduction of beneficial additives. Thank your congressman.

  • I just use the Motocraft synthetic. Its just as cheap as any of the name brand synthetic oils and they won't say anything against that brand.
  • The government got involved with motor oil now and anti-wear additives like ZDDP, that have been used for many years, can no longer be used. It would be best to use an oil that passed Ford's tests. Of course this forum will not let me post a link because of the percent issue.

If its true that the new Powerstroke is good for 300k miles, I guess if it doesn't like my oil and wears out in 200,000 its not going to make any difference to me.
