Jun 24, 2015Find a nearby auto parts store and ask them to pull the code. That will give you an indication of what happened or is happening. Could be as simple as a misfire was detected while the engine was under a heavy load. In the future you can get sometime like a ScanGuage or Torque Pro with a Bluetooth adapter to view and clear the codes yourself. You'll also would be able to monitor parameters that are not available on your dash.
The tank sensor issue is a very common one. They are notorious for being inaccurate, even on brand new trailers. Most have just given up on them. Just look down through the toilet to view your status. There's aftermarket ones that you can buy that are a lot more accurate.
The gas cap issue is strange. It could be that the new cap isn't venting properly. As fuel leaves the tank, negative pressure sets in. There's a valve in the gas cap that should allow air in to equalize the pressure. Before you go down the gas cap road, pull those codes and figure out what the real problem is.
