7.3 PSD Excursion towing Video

Ran across this video on youtube of a man pulling a 10k lb travel trailer with a 7.3 PSD.

No real questions, just thought I would share.

Coming from a V10 Gasser the cabin is seems to be much louder than my previous F350. Up and down the rolling hills his transmission didn't seem to shift at all. I know my V10 would have shifted to second on at least one of those hills. I really hated the 3.73 gears in my Dually though.

the Driver claims about 8 MPG.. my V10 got 7.5 so in his example compared to mine not much of a difference in mpg.

On edit... here is a video on youtube with someone pulling a 7,000 lb trailer with a V10 F250... the sound is very much like mine was

Thanks!

Jeremiah

Where in the video where the hills? :-)

Looked like Georgia or Alabama to me, there aren't any long hills... But those 7.3 X's are great rigs!

    I think it's in Missouri...

Dodge Guy, thanks for the report on the V10's performance.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the link to the vid. I always love watching what others do when towing. I wish I would`ve recorded our trip through the VA and WV mountains and the Smoky`s. lots of pretty decent grades driving those. I hit way more mountains in the east than when we went out west to Glacier NP in MT!

    Thanks again!

  • My X can do everything that the one in the vid is doing. seems the 7.3 is struggling running at 2800rpm! I never have an issue using O/D either.

Gotta love the first comment left for the Excursion video:

"I'm really digging the "service engine soon" light on your dash while you beat the ballsack off your 7.3?"

All said and done, it's a shame they don't make the X anymore.

Actually, you CAN get an Excursion with all the latest bells and whistles...bring a fat wallet! Ford Excursion conversions
  • Cel would typically be set if there is an over boost condition. I thought I got a glimpse of egt at 1359 and I sure hope that is pre turbo and transient only. I would like to see how much boost he is running. 7.3 are noisy but after 5 minutes you don't notice it. Hard to comment intelligently about the performance without knowing what mods have been made, it only, takes money to make them do whatever you want
  • Yep, I watched a few more of his videos and it turns out he has a straight pipe on his Excursion. 7.3 plus straight pipe plus tuner plus some mod to his turbo and he has a really loud cabin. LOL

What kind of MPG should he be getting with 10k in a 7.3 4x4?

    Thanks!

I laughed at the CEL being on, along with the POS Glowshift gasser boost/vacuum gauge.

I guarantee quieter cabin and better mileage if he would let it upshift on the downhill and flats. But for all I know it could be like 99% of the X's I see and be on 35"+.

Seriously, with OD off, he's turning about 2700 RPM at 65 MPH. My 8.1 would be spinning about 3000 at that speed with OD off and pulling that weight up that hill just a smoothly.

I agree that the X sounds really loud, but the video narrator says early on " dig that exhaust" which makes me think he has a cat-back system on it, in addition to the aftermarket gauges on the dash.

All said and done, it's a shame they don't make the X anymore.
