- MP_soldierExplorerStock 2001, cc 4x4,drw? I get 15 mpg empty, 8-10 towing 9000 lbs TT in overdrive at 65 mph
- BadDogPSDExplorerI averaged 11.5 mpg towing a 7,000 lb Nash with my 97 F250.
- dieseltruckdrivExplorer IIMy 95 with 4.10s gets 19 regularly on the highway, and it got 10 pulling our 5er.
The 2000 with 3.73s gets 10 pulling our 5er, but will only get 15 empty, and it doesn't matter if I set the cruise, or drive using my foot, go 55 or 70. In my mind it should do better when empty, but it doesn't.
These are hand calculated mileages. - alboyExplorerID keep what you have, way less long term maintenance then an older truck. If not id look at a good used ecoboost as a few have mentioned.
- I had a 99.5 F350, 4X4, 4 dr, 8 ft bed, SRW with the 7.3 with a Hypertech programmer for 50 hp gain and 135 ft/lbs. Consistently averaged 11.5 mpg. Usually towed about 62-65 mph. Didn't seem to matter much whether flat ground or over the mountains, the mileage didn't vary too much.
Towing a Big Country 3500 (just under 40 ft). I forget the weight distribution on it with that truck. I now have a F-350 with extended cab 4X4 8 ft bed and it scales when loaded at 10K on the truck and 10K on the 5er so I the weights would have been about the same for the 99.5. - Star_GazerExplorerMine averaged 10.75 pulling a 4400lb full profile TT. That was averaged over about 60k miles. Head wind would drop to 7-8 and tail would get me 12-13. But why is it we seldom get tail winds??
When I started pulling the smaller Casita I thought it would do much better but averaged around 13.75 over 15k miles. My GPS says my average moving speed is 64 mph over an entire trip.
I traded that and got the Transit with 3.5 Ecoboost and get the same mpg without the added fuel and oil change cost. Plus it is quiet.
Dean - hotpepperkidExplorerI get 8-11.5 at 65MPH towing 11K lbs. Wind seams to have the biggest effect
- buckyExplorer IIMy former PSD got right at 10 mpg with three different TTs. I got 14 once pulling a lower enclosed car trailer.
- Bamaman11ExplorerI have a 2003 F250 7.3 with 60 hp tow and 80 hp econo tunes.
I'm good for 20 mpg on the open highway. Towing my 11K lb. fifth wheel, I see about 11 mpg. Towing a 31' travel trailer, I recently saw 13 mpg. - majorgatorExplorer1996 Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4, about 10 MPG averaging between 55-65 MPH, whether I'm towing my 5K TT or my much, much heavier equipment trailers. 4:10 gearing, chipped, stage 1 injectors, exhaust, intake, and on and on and on...so take it with a grain of salt. BTW, get about 16 MPG non-towing.
