7 pin traditional versus SAE

My son and I added a brake controller to his 2011 F150 and backed it up to my TT to test it. My trailer plug does not fit his 7 pin socket. I did some quick research and found that I have the traditional type with blades and his socket has what looks like bullet pins and the locater notch is more narrow than my plug. also they appear to be oriented differently.
Is there and adapter to go from SAE to traditional or do we need to replace the socket? This came with the truck and has a 4 pin next to the 7 pin. Brian.
  • Depending upon the trailer(s) he pulling, changing out to a tv style plug is a 15-30 min task. Better option vs adapters IMHO. Especially if ALL the 7 wire trailers have the RV still plug.

$50 or so, you can get an RV/4 pin female all in one for truck.

Sounds like it has a 7-pin round pin connector and this is the adapter you need.

There are also 6-pin round pin connectors like this which I saw offered with a 4-pin attached to the side. Make sure you get the right one.
  • Hmmm, well must have been a choice on the tow package and he picked wrong!
  • Dunno.. I had a 97 F150 with the round 7 pin and it worked with my 2003 Prowler TT. When I got the 13 F150 the prowler plugged right in. My 2019 Rockwood plugs right in too. Both have blade type of connectors.

    Good luck! Mitch
  • Thanks old biscuit. I think his socket had a center pin. I'll have him send me a picture of what he has.
Is this a common thing? I thought all TT wiring was standard. I assume there are trailers that use the SAE style. If so, I guess wait and see what the trailer he gets has.
