90fws and hitch extension

Hi, just registered here. The wife and i just bought an 09 adventurer 90fws so far were very happy with it coming from a tent trailer. Ive got it on my 07 3500 longbox dodge, and Im trying to figure out what kind and how long of hitch extension I need for towing a 6x12 flat deck trailer with a couple dirt bikes and maybe a cooler or two. This is my first experience with a TC so maybe this is a dumb question but it seems like I would need about 3' extension which seems awfully long, can the tongue of the trailer be partially under the step of the camper or should it be fully out from underneath? thanks for any help for this newbie

  • I purchased an 18" extension at Harbour Freight, and when I got it home found out it would not go into my 2" receiver on my truck. Then I discovered there was no hole to hold it in anyway. Back to HF for a refund tomorrow. Darn, I had a 20% off coupon.
  • Thanks for the reply, having just dropped a lot of money on the camper tork lifts and fast guns I'd like to do this in expensively but properly for now anyways. I think I could do a 36" extension, do they usually come with chains and everything to help with the side to side movement?
  • Putting the ball under the camper will make it a lot easier to crunch your trailer into the camper on sharp turns.
A 3' extension isn't that bad. I use a 4' extension to tow my boat behind my 11' camper. I use a Torquelift superhitch. They are expensive but worth it. My boat weighs nearly 5,000 pounds.
For your small trailer you could get by with less. I used to use a 48" Reese hitch extension that fit into a 2.5" receiver. It towed the same boat just fine. I would think that Reese makes a 36" version.
If, however, you ever think you might tow a heavier trailer it might make sense to get the Superhitch now.
