94 chevy dully???

just looking at a 94 chevy dully with a 5.7 gas engine with 190 HP and 300 ft pounds torque. it comes with a 05 alfa 31 ft 5th wheel weighing in at 12,000 lbs.
can't find any towing specs on it.
anyone know if this truck can tow that 5th wheel?
thanks
  • If it has 4.10 gears, all of a 13500 gcwr. If 4.56 gears, around 16K total. That is a throttle body setup, ie an electronic 2 bbl carburetor setup. Better than a true 2bbl setup, not as good as a iirc, 95 or 96 vortec 350.....but gets the job done.

If it has a 4 or 5 sp manual, I would go for it to a point. If a TH400, bypass really quick!

RA is 7500 lbs, front around 3800-4000 capacity.

I do have some wants for my 96 SW K3500 I had. I like that body design etc over the 2000+ ones......that is me. If you go that old, try to get a 96 or newer with the vortec/multiport fuel injection option. Then a 350 is 255/330 or so for specs. I have this with my 2000 C2500, every bit as strong or stronger than a TBI454!

  • It might be a nice one to buy and then throw a Cummins in when you get tired of going slow up hills. Or when the 350 blows up.

Well if being sold as a set, it likely has for the last 10 years!
  • The '94 automatic would be a 4L80E. My experience was with a '91 and I'll say OK for flatland towing with that weight, prepare for trannie heat issues in mountains.
  • thanks for all the responses. still waiting for the owners to call to ask them about some of the questions that you posted. well keep u updated .
    thanks

About what a new 2500HD is capable of today.

In most respects I'd say it isn't nearly as capable as a new 2500 HD. Probably has a higher RAWR I guess.
  • A newer 2500HD has much more power and much better transmission gearing. The '94 dually will marginally handle the pin weight and will move the load, but compared with modern engines the 5.7 is weak and the 4L80E has terrible gearing, especially for starting out on a hill.
  • Looking at your state map, and being very familiar with those trucks I would suggest that you pass.
That thing is going to be a very thirsty dog even unloaded. The places you go have hills, and big ones at that.
I've had several of those trucks, and loved them but.............
