A Home Built Tonneau Cover Camper?

Hello all, I just joined up to the forum in hopes of finding and sharing information on a type of camper I wish to construct. Last year I had cobbled together a simple set of walls for the box of my truck out of 2x2's and 1/4" chipboard mostly that I could transport in the bed of the truck to campsite and then assemble the panels and I draped a tarp over the top for a roof. I wanted something that would enable me to camp anywhere where I could get with my 4x4 truck, that was simple and lightweight. The wife and I went for a weekend trip and it worked pretty good, but I have since got a fiberglass tonneau cap for my box and thought that this would make a perfect roof for a new version of my truck box camping.
I, of course, jumped on google and searched for tonneau cover style campers and had found a bit of info on a camper called Top Up, that had been around for a short time before being bought out by a bigger company and promptly eliminated. This was the exact answer to what I wished to do, but unfortunately am left to design this from scratch.

Just wondering if there was any other truck campers out there that have one of these style of truck campers, either a build your own or commercially made type, and if so, have any information or helpful pointers for this kind of endeavor.

  • I've seen several on the web.

Livin lite (camp lite) used to makes some that pop out into a tent from the bed.

This one may be bigger than your looking for but looked to have a hard top and tent sides. Weight was about a 1000#.

I'm sure there are more out there.

    Keep looking.
  • you could use some air lift cylinders in a 'x' pattern. in the front and both sides. to hold the top up or down depending on storing or using. the position of the connection points will determine how well the supports hold the top down..
connect a canvas/nylon material to the top and sides of your camper. include a zippered door at the tailgate area. set up a folding camp cot or two and your ready to camp.. led lights attached to the underside of the top can provide great lighting.. a large cooler will provide a table and storage of perishable supplies... a 1/4" thick sheet of plywood covering 1-3" of foam board on the floor will help keep the space warm on cool nights... you could cover the plywood with linoleum to help keep the floor clean..
