Aanyone ever replaced propane tanks

When I had my Vacationeer camper that hung out the back of the truck, with the propane compartment at the lower rear corner of the rear overhang, I kept the tank valve off while driving. With no substantial structure protecting the tank in a collision, just a few 2x2 sticks of wood, thin plywood and aluminum siding, I felt it best to not have an open-valve tank in that position, just waiting to light up and blow the whole rig in a only a small rear end accident.

When I had my Six-Pac, the propane tank was mounted forward of the rear end of the truck, protected by the truck frame/bumper/bed in the event of a collision. I didn't mind travelling with the tank on, so I could run the fridge on propane while driving. I did turn off the tank at gas stations though.

Are they ASME tanks or DOT cylinders ?

I have horizontal non- opd 20`s that I replaced the o ring seals on and had recert. ,they stamped the recert date on the tank , but as soon as I can afford new opd`s Im getting them , if you blow a hose out or get in an accident with the valves open they blow out propane full blast , opd tanks will only blow out fuel at a much lower volume. Probably why they have to have a big sticker on them non -opd, for first responders
In the mean time I`ll be leaving the valves off while traveling and in storage

I had my 1969 ASME horizontal tanks recertified with a DOT sticker last year. The ASME tanks don't need recertification, but my friend at a major LP supply company said that most companies won't argue with you if they see the recertification sticker.

Yep, this is a common problem. I just ran into it last week with my two 30#, pre-1998, horizontal, non-OPD cylinders which were also re-certified two years ago. Took them to the same station I'd been taking them to for the past 4 years, but they had a new attendant who insisted he had just returned from training and therefore knew that my cylinders were non-compliant with the OPD regulation. No amount of reasoning with him helped. So I got them filled somewhere else, then contacted his superiors who assured me that he would be "dealt with." I don't mind if someone is unsure and wants to err on the side of caution until they can get verification, but he was rude, adamant and 100% wrong.

I think that with the links, I have an answer to my question. The forklift 33# cans are 27" long and my box is 24 1/2 inches deep. A Manchester RV 30# tank is 23.7" long and the same diameter as my 20# tanks. Plus they will have the OPD valve and a gauge.

Thanks for the help with the links. They gave me a hint on where to look further.

BTW, the reason that I have extra hose on the front tank, is that I can disconnect it and run that 10' hose to an external tank.
