Abnormal Tire Wear on my Jayco 23B

My trailer is a Jayco 23B. I bought it new and now have about 80,000 miles on it. My tires constantly wear out on the inside. I replaced one axel in 2007 and they still wear out on the inside. Does anyone know anything that might help me. I'm tired of buying new tires.
  • Even with your tire wear issue, I am envious of anyone who gets to put that kind of mileage on their trailer! As much as I try I have yet to get over 1200 miles in any year on my trailer. Typically three or four long weekends per year and rarely more than 100 miles from home.
How many miles would you estimate you are getting on a new set of tires before they wear through on the inside edge? And is the where similar on all of the tires inside edge?
  • I had tire problems a ways back, more of a scalloped look. The shackles and bushings were shot, the holes in the shackles got badly elongated. I had them and the hangers replaced. That was with only maybe 25k on it. Might be worth taking a look.

When I had the welder at the house replacing the hangers, which suprisingly he replaced on quite a few trailers, he mentioned the biggest issue he had was folks knocking the axles out of alignment. Smacking into curbs and such.
  • Isn't this a single torsion axle suspension?

Torsion axles use a piece of rubber to hold the swinging axle stub in place and allow for "springing". This rubber wears/deteriorates with time, and allows the axle to lose its position.

Overloading a torsion axle causes them to deteriorate quicker, and also causes misalignment.
Overload causes inside thread tire wear.

There's 2 alignment issues..camber and toe. Both change with torsion axles that are failing/have failed.

Ball height can affect tire wear with torsion axles........is trailer towed level?
  • Yes it is tandem torsion bar axles. And the axles are at there maximum load. The axles are designed with a negative camber with the hopes that they straiten out under load. I also suspect that when braking the axles flex causing toe out. A cursory check with a rafter square shows camber to be ok . I get about 10,000 miles out of a tire. I wish Jayco had used bigger tires and axles.
  • One of the frequent complaints of the 23B, is its poor cargo capacity, which makes it easy to overload it.
