AC control thermostat

I assume that most rooftop AC units in TC's are controled by the knobs on the AC inside up at the ceiling. With this type of control you turn on the fan to lo or hi and select either ac or no ac. Then set the temp knob. Then as it cools the built in thermostat shuts off the comperssor and cooling but the fan keeps going.

So is it possible to have the wall thermostat (if dual type) that controls the heating also control the AC unit?

I surmise that it may require the use of relays and such as the voltage may not be able to pass thru the wall thermo to operate the AC. But if this is doable the wall would/could shut off the fan as well when the temp has dropped...so set the AC unit to HI FAN AND MAX COOL then let the wall control it. Or any combo on the AC unit like LO FAN and MAX COOL. I already have a dual (AC and HT) household type thermo as the RV style croaked and I replaced it on the HT side obviously.

So anyone done this? You electric gurus, this is your time to shine!!!

THX for your input.

Yep, similar to the t-stat in the picture above but with digital LCD temp readout/setpoint:

On 'auto', the fan only runs when the compressor needs to.
  • Did mine for $25 including digital thermostat that also controls furnace.
Click on my name and check my started threads for this year.
    Good Luck, Mike

  • The idea of buying an inside control unit is unique...I am going to look into this as it is a Coleman Mach on my roof...wow maybe a problem solved. It is on my list. THX
  • Great subject mater here and thanks for posting. I too have been wanting to make this upgrade and I'm hoping for some more input from others. Victor
  • For example look herefor the ceiling unit , control box and stat , this is for my mach 1 but many Colemans use the same parts , look at RVP`s site for your AC unit parts
  • I dont know how it works with any other AC , but with RVP / Coleman if you buy a different ceiling unit a control box , that goes inside the lower AC plenum , and a new stat you have what your after, you can chose manual and have the fan run when the compressor shuts off , or auto and both shut off until the stat signals to cool again
You can also hook your heater to the new stat
You do have to run a ground wire and probably a new positive to the stat area and run the control wires to the AC from the stat, depending on the way your camper is layed out it is not to tuff
I use a long bellhanger type drill bit to go from the AC hole to the closet the stat backs up to , to make a hole thru the sandwiched foam core ceiling
If I go to bed and the AC`s running and it cools off during the nite the AC shut off and the Honda runs just to charge the batts the rest of the nite
