I thought I saw the cable there when I had to fix the fan switch but I'll double check. I did end up getting a 13500 unit because it's the smallest I could find used. New was over 1500 for just the unit. 500 for a unit well only use for a few weeks in the summer just made more sense
Sounds like a reasonable plan.
With the larger unit, one trick I have found is to crack a roof vent and window to let some of the outside heat in to make the a/c run longer. This does seem to help some unless it is real humid outside. The other thing that would help even more is if you can mod the a/c so the fan turns off when not in the cooling mode. My fan runs constantly so I think it is putting the moisture still on the coils back into the air.
