I would check with the local DOT/DMV guys and see if what you are purchasing and doing will pass safety inspection...
I installed some lights once and had to remove them to be able to pass safety inspection...

Counterpoint: toy haulers and horse trailers that have rear facing loading lights. They are all on toggle switches. That's how they came from the manufacturer. And they are brighter than backup lights.
