Additional spring leaves or airbags?

I bought a 2007 Nash / Arctic Fox 26X TT last year to tow behind my 2005 Ford F250 CC 4X4 diesel truck.

The TT weighs 8,600 to 9,000# with about 900# of tongue weight. It currently has two 6V batteries on the tongue, but it will get heavier as I plan to add two additional batteries for a total of four and I plan to install about 300W of solar on the front part of the roof.

In the truck bed I have a 130 gal tank which weighs a little over 1,000# when full. Then, throw in a generator and other junk.

The truck does have a WDH with 1,200# bars but it sags more than I want. I called the local spring shop and they want $700 to add a leaf. They make them there in the shop. I priced air bags and they're about $500 if I do the work or about $650 installed.

I've used additional spring leaves on the front springs of snow plow trucks with good results, but have never used air bags.

Which way would you go?

  • Check out timbrens. No difference in unloaded ride but they help with sag and loaded ride. About $200 and no maintenance involved, and really easy install.
  • You will find that AF 26X has a tongue weight of 1,200+ lbs. when loaded, before you add 2 more batteries.
  • I vote airbags. You can adjust as needed and they can actually improve ride.
  • I have two F350s. The one I use predominantly for pulling my landscape trailers (2013) has a custom made spring that ran me about $800. They made a HUGE difference. Whether I'm hauling nothing or a big trailer in the back, the truck has very little sag but rides just like it did before I added the leaf. I've had it waaaaay overloaded at times with fertilizer or ice melt and it shows very little sag.

The other truck (2015) gets to pull the fifth wheel. It has air bags. Its nice to be able to adjust them as I wish.

Long story short, get the added leaf if you're just pulling a TT. It will work really well with your WD hitch. It made my F350 work like Ford should have built it to begin with.
  • Air bags will give you a better ride and can be minimized when you aren't towing.
