Flat-dead batteries would certainly cause the no-power problem, even with the truck hooked up through the "umbilical." Dead batteries absorb an immense amount of current.
At best the wiring through the umbilical is 10ga. That's nowhere near enough to pass the Amps needed to satisfy the dead batteries, and have enough left to power the camper.
Your jumper cables are much heavier (likely 6ga or heavier) and are connected directly from the truck battery to the camper batteries.
In this instance the repair center was misinformed.
