When we made the trip to Alaska in 2003, most of the road heave issues were marked with a roadside post. Back then, folks talked about using their existing old rig for the trip and then retire it for a new one after the trip.
We went with a caravan and had some advice on how to prep our vehicles which included protecting the trailer and tow vehicle fronts from rock damage. We used screen in front of the truck radiator and duct taped cardboard or coroplast to the bottom front of the trailer. Slow down and the rocks from on-coming vehicles are less likely to chip your windshield.
Their summer construction season is short so road repairs typically close the entire pavement, rather than one lane, and they route you alongside on a gravel stretch that is either dusty or muddy. It all washes off.
Don't miss the trip, we are glad we did it!
