Advice on Yellowstone

The town of West Yellowstone has full service RV parks. The Grizzley RV park is nice.
Close to everything.

We just came back from a trip to Yellowstone. The park is huge, consider moving mid week otherwise you have a lot of driving to get past areas you already visited. We stayed at Grizzly RV park in the little town of West Yellowstone. It is a really nice, big, RV park; but there are no open fires allowed anywhere in West Yellowstone. As you have recognized, if you are boondocking your limiting factor will be water and dumping. Even with a tote tank you have to be able to dump it somewhere. We did a few days at Yellowstone, then went through the park to about a mile outside the of the South entrance and stayed at Flagg Ranch in the national forest. It was the only place we could have a fire, but the mosquitoes were prehistoric size and there were a lot of them. We visited the Northern half of the park from West Yellowstone, then did the Southern half of the park from Flagg Ranch. After a couple days there we went about 2 hours further and spent a few days at Jackson WY visiting the Grand Tetons. There we stayed at The Virginian RV park. Again, nice, big, no fires. It was linked to The Virginian motel, but the entrance is down a side street. BTW: bring a wide variety of clothes. We were there in late June. We had temps in the 80's and we had snow at Old Faithful - in June! I recommend that you plan and make reservations soon. We did ours about 6 months in advance and lots of places were already full or filling fast. Don't delay!

There is a very nice campground in Inland Park Idaho.It's call Red Rock.It's about 20 miles from the west entrance to Yellowstone..

It was a hard choice between Inland Park RV and Grizzly RV. I decided to make reservations at Grizzly RV Park and make a request for specific pull through sites (they said that with reservations this early, they can usually accommodate). I know there's no open fires, but we'll get over that. We'll probably be gone from morning to night anyway.

We stay at Buffalo Crossing in West Yellowstone. West Yellowstone has many activities for everyone.
Remember that you will be looking at long days to do the loops within Yellowstone.
Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone is the only park campground with hook ups.

I appreciate all of the good information since we are planning to go there next summer. Will probably make reservations in December.

One thing to keep in mind is how gigantically huge Yellowstone is. We decided to stay outside the park last year (four days about 45 minutes from north entrance) and moved to the other side for another few days (about 60 minutes from entrance).

Most things we wanted to see were 30-45 minute drive past the entrance. Staying until dusk for animal watching turned out to be a bad idea since I was driving a long way to the campground in complete darkness on twisty roads with tons of wandering wildlife.

I'd definitely vote for staying in Yellowstone next time.

We're going the middle of July and would like get advice on the following:
-Where to set up camp:
-We'll be hauling a 34' trailer
-We need a reservation site
-Don't want to camp in a parking lot
-Full hook-up would be awesome, but can settle for dry camp also
-Central location

Your only choice in the park is Fishing Bridge if you want full hookups. The majority of people are not in the campground during the day. When you leave early in the am and return after dark, does it really matter what the place looks like?

-Advice on dry camping. We have never been dry camping and my kids (and us included) are used to full amenities.

It's good practice to conserve at home too. Start having ppl turn off lights they aren't using and turning off water instead of letting it run.

At the least, we would like lights, so we're planning to get a small Gen to recharge during the week.
-We want to be able to take showers in the camper, so would need to fill the tank and empty the tank.
We have all the needed items to do both, including a portable water tank and external pump to transfer into our fresh water tank.
-We love fires; whether we use our portable pit or buy wood there; especially as cool as it gets

No fires allowed at FB. We didn't have the energy for one while we were there anyhow.

-Any additional advice on what to bring while dry camping

Grizzly RV Park is great, especially for families. The Town of West Yellowstone does not allow camp fires. Why use your shower in your TT when Grizzly RV Park has such nice clean, hot showers? Stay at Grizzly RV Park and enjoy Yellowstone NP.
