Ron - it's been a long time since I have dabbled in CFD. And the programs weren't cheap even then... curious as to the software you are using, grid gen tools etc - and your confidence for this application. I cant get too deep without showing my poor memory and shallow skills but I am always willing to (re)learn..
Hi twichers. I design using SolidWorks (full 3D solid models) and have used the SW CFD and Autodesk's Flow Design. It is dead simple to use. Not too sure about it's accuracy yet. I have been running quite a few models through it the last couple days but I am not happy with the results yet. Could be me but the jury is still out. I am in the process of installing the full blown Autodesk CFD now. That will be a steeper learning curve. I would like to have some simulation verified by real-life testing before I believe it but the ability to think of a design and within the hour see air flowing over it is crazy.
SolidWorks with FEA and CFD you would be in around US $30K. Autodesk offers all of their software free to students to learn on and then you can just buy what need monthly.
It would be interesting to talk with you more about your experience. Feel free to send me a private message.
