Assuming the same width and height, I would anticipate a loss of probably 1 or maybe 2 mpg overall. Not huge.
2MPG @ 10mpg is huge as a percentage. If someone spends $5k per year on fuel, that's $1000 more!
Weight is not significant fuel usage difference between any two TTs except in the mountains. It's all aerodynamics. Any any differences between them are impossible to compare by analyses. V-Nose, more sloped front, etc could be better than straight flat up/down. But no ones know until you get it behind your truck.
Yup, and if someone were getting 4 mpg, a loss of 2 mpg would double the fuel expense! But I did say, "probably 1" mpg. Not big in terms of percentage for most people, and if it's too big in terms of dollars then the person just can't afford to camp in the first place.
There's some talk about kayaks; my experience was the opposite. I towed while carrying a kayak atop the Highlander, for 2000 miles (Tulsa to MN north shore, MI UP and back). Gas mileage was down about 1 mpg (11 instead of 12). Maybe I needed 2 kayaks instead of 1, dunno. ;)
