Affect of trailer weight on mileage
First off, I know some people get irked about mileage questions. But some of us just want to know these things. I put on a lot of miles towing, and a significant decrease in mileage adds up. Fuel is the single biggest expense of our travels.
My current trailer weighs about 4,000 dry. We are looking at a new one that is only a foot longer but weighs 6,500 empty. My truck should handle the additional weight OK, but just wondering what I could expect it to do to mpg's.
I know that wind resistance is more of a factor than weight, yet I'm sure there is some effect of pulling a heavier load. What could I expect for a decrease? 5%? 10%? More? It probably won't sway the decision to buy or not, but I just like to know what to expect up front.
