The gauges are dampened/controlled by the computer.

I can run in 115 heat, near full throttle in 2nd gear, A/C blasting and the engine temperature barely moves and well within the normal zone. Truck is 15 years old with new Prestone every 5 years.

I have no idea if I am at 190 or 250 actually. Still normal so no real concern.

Would rather be safe then sorry. No one has said letting it cool down for a few minutes does any harm. I'm not in that big of rush.

For me, it isn't the turbo or the coolant temp as much as it is the trans temp. I will let the truck run for a couple of minutes to cool everything down and make sure the transmission has a chance to do so. This will also let the turbo spool down, cool off and the same for the coolant. I know it doesn't have to be done, but that is just what I do. Makes me feel beter and that is all that counts.

because we are talking about heating and fan running I would like to add my story. Towing and going into higher elevation areas our fan can run at a low speed but at time can hit full fan. this is what the scanguage shows. Engine temperature 197 but air intake can be 140 degrees. This seems to the deal for 3 trip going south so something has changed. thinking the sir sensor might be goofy. did have another rv fella show what he did for his air sensor and I have not done anything yet.

Same here. My DD13 will run right up to 225 ,230 when pulling a big hill like fancy gap.

I agree with you, new radiator's are not that much. If my radiator needs to comes out a new radiator will go back in.

Your coolant temp is what I would worry about! I think I would have it flow tested flushed or just buy a new one! Where do you have your EG thermocouple mounted? If it's in the exhaust manifold your EG temps are fine. If it's mounted just in front of the turbo then it's at the max and if behind your running way to hot.

As for worrying about shutting down don't, unless your running hard and pull into a rest stop don't worry. If pulling off the interstate for fuel by time you get into the station the turbo will have cooled down enough to shut it down. Myself I just left the truck run during the fuel up.

BTW I ran full syn oil from the 500 mile mark until i sold the truck with 150K on her.

It's not. I've owned and designed turbo engines for over 35 years, both gas and diesel and never had a turbo problem. I wish I had some pictures of the turbo hot section so hot it was glowing orange. Never ever any synthetic oil either. These are also old oil only cooled turbo's with sleeve bearings and not the fancy water cooled ball bearing they have now days.

I've only let an engine idle maybe two or three times in my life. One time was when the water temp got to about 270 and EGT was about 1,400 post turbo. Things were a little warm that day. I have yet to see any coking in any of my turbo's I have taken off my engines.

I tend to error on the side of Cummins Recommendations in the Supplemental Diesel Manual that came with my Dodge Ram

Stopping The Engine
Idle the engine a few minutes before routine shutdown.
After full load operation, idle the engine 3 to 5 minutes
before shutting it down. This idle period will allow the
lubricating oil and coolant to carry excess heat away from
the combustion chamber, bearings, internal components,
and turbocharger. This is especially important for turbo-
charged, charge air cooled engines
