I'm finding it hilarious to read what airbags supposedly do according to some of the posts here. In any case, I didn't invent the technique, but this is what many of us do:
1. Level the truck side to side and front to back.
2. Determine how much gap you have between overloads and overload stop.
3. Use some material to close that gap + 1/2" or so. I use Energy Suspension bump stops because I find they work and I know from having them on two different trucks that they work for me. Other people use steel, or hard rubber.
My bump stops look like these.
