Air Bumpers

Has anyone ever heard of an 'air bumper' for TT?

For those that may not know, an 'air bumper' is a bumper which you can fill with compressed air and use to air up tires when you need to.
They are mostly utilized by four wheeling guys to air up their tires after getting back to the road.

MY TT stinky slinky bumper is eating itself from the inside out. There doesn't seem to be much I can do about it so my thought was to replace the bumper. Since I have already made another, non rust able, storage solution they thought came to me that perhaps an air bumper would be a better choice.

If not an air bumper are there other choices out there? A quick Google search turned up very few.

Thank you

  • Of course the other suggestions are more frugal.
It was just a passing thought after seeing it online.
A small portable air compressor with an inverter would be the solution I think.

They DO sell the same bumper for 52 dollars but I'd still have to have it welded and finished. When the time comes I think a straight "I" beam bumper will do the trick.

It's NEVER a good idea to store sewer pipe in the rear bumper because the constant moisture will cause all of them to rust out. Far better to use a PVC pipe strapped TO the bumper. IN regards to your original question, I doubt if anyone makes an air bumper specifically for a trailer but you could likely have mounts for one fabricated by most any machine shop.

I only wish the last two owners had known that!
Now I have to deal with the mess.

  • Pep Boys and places like Sears sell 12v portable air compressors that are pretty good. I've got the Pep Boys one it comes in a small carrying case with hose and cord. Also has a built in gauge but I never trust them. My son carries one that has a preset function. Just set the pressure you want and it shuts off when it reaches the pressure. They're only about $40 and small so they don't take up much room.

It wont hold enough volume to fill a tire , a portable compressor would be better

I thought once that it would be a good idea to get one of those pancake types and bolt it to the frame and wire in a switched, waterproof outlet for it and run the line to the outside of the skirting so that I could plug in an air hose, switch it on and have all the compressed air I wanted. Ran out of money and just have not gotten around to doing it.

  • Bolt a 6 pound tank to the frame under the skirting (or)somewhere convenient and charge it. Should do the trick and likely cost a lot less than a specialty item.
  • A portable compressor would be cheaper and more versatile. I have one with a 2 gallon tank that runs just fine on a 400 watt inverter.

  • Must not be popular, nothing really showed up for air bumper on google unless they are called something else
