air lift 1000's and WDH

Extremely new to the world of TT.'s I have a 2014 ram 1500 crew cab and a 287 bhsw. The three times we have used them, my family and I have loved each experience. My question is simple...is there any benefit to adding air lift 1000's (just as extra support), when I am already using a WDH. The truck does ride low, but not with a sag. The hitch is doing its job...but again, would there be benefits if i added the air lifts?

Just curious others thoughts...

  • I also have a 2014 ram and use the aiift 1000 bags. I gain about 2 inches of clearance under my wdh bars. My trailer has a bottom mount coupler and clearance can be an issue. The bags also firm up the rear end

  • If it doesn't sag, I wouldn't (and don't) use them.
Frankly, I have no need for the bags I put on years ago.
  • I have used airbags for years with a WDH and they can be used in conjunction without complicating anything.

When I am carrying my camper the payload in the bed of my truck can vary by 2000lbs or more, so airbags are a great way to compliment the suspension.

The WDH is designed to only help with tongue weight and not additional payload. If there is minimal, or no, additional payload then they aren't going to do as much good.

If you use both setup the WDH without any additional payload in the TV and measure the height of the rear bumper. Then add the additional payload and airup the bags to about 1/2" lower than the TT alone. This puts some of the payload weight on the springs and not all on the bags for improved stability and ride.

AIrbags can also improve cornering stability, when plumbed separatly, and help the OEM suspension last longer before sagging.

It all depends on the end use.
  • I think rear suspension aides complicate WDH adjustment and mask overloaded rear axles with bumper pull trailers. Lots of people do it anyway and report improved handling.
