Years ago we bought CAMPFIRE IN A CAN. Works out well for our own fire -- uses propane. We bring an extra 20lb can with us and use it all year (fill once per year). It's like a gas fireplace. You adjust the flame. Can even roast marshmellows or hotdogs. Looks like the price is a LOT higher than it was 8 years ago.
As far as neighbors smoke, yes, we sometimes just have to go in. I, too, used to like campfire but anymore I literally go into asthma mode and can't breathe. We've camped at places that have no campfire policies for various reasons, but do allow campfire in can.
